Home Plants About Us Contact Us
We have had professionals in the field report back to us that there is literally no other nursery that compares in Central America for quality. We have designed the very nursery we wish we had found when we completed our dream home in Costa Rica several years ago. Our Goal
We promote the inherent beauty and value of Costa Rica's own trees by cultivating the best product we can. We are a family business with the Gales joining us, bringing their three generations of experience to Cocobolo Tree Farm. We hope to use this site to enrich the information known about the flora of the region and its impact on the environment.
What's In A Name?
Deciding upon a name proved to be more of a challenge then we imagined. After long discussions we finally settled on the name Pau d'Arco. Ed Bernhardt from The New Dawn Center introduced us to it. Its botanical name it Tabebuia Impectignosa and its beauty and intrinsic health benefits made it a winner. A coupld month later we hired Kay Dodge and her husband Estaban, long time tree lovers and propagators, to help identify trees at the farm "finca" we had purchased south of Liberia for the nursery. As we walked the property they pointed out several large and small trees that they said were a rare and endangered species. The large parent tree was just outside our office. Kay said, "You should name your farm after this." The tree, Cocobolo (Dalbergia Retusa) may be better known as Rosewood. It is valued for its beauty - streaked wood with hues ranging from brown-red to yellow - and resilience against insects as well as its hardness. It has long been a highly valued wood for the making of musical instruments, art pieces, and fine furniture. The beautiful clustered white flowers and long legume fruits enhance the beauty of this tree. Some believe the name Rosewood comes from its sweet fragrance when it is cut or burned. We are proud to call our business Cocobolo Tree Farm. Besides, we think Cocobolo is fun to say!
